Better Health Care

Written by David Chappell and published in EADT on Mon 8th Mar 2010

The report on incompetent nurses continuing to treat patients issued by the Council for Healthcare Regulatory Excellence (another quango - CHRE) is disturbing. It seems the Nursing Midwifery Council (NMC) are accused of closing investigations prematurely without proper authority. Ordinary people might well wonder what is going on? Surely hospitals employing midwifes or nurses should be able to act promptly and quickly when problems arise in their hospitals with patients properly protected and investigations carried out swiftly with expertise.

Reform the NHS

Written by David Chappell and published in Bury Free Press on Fri 5th Mar 2010

I share the concern of Anne Berry (BFP 26/2/10) over the issue of meals in our hospitals and the lack of understanding of the basic care needed by patients in terms of nutrition and cleaning patients. It is not simply a matter of targets and cost cutting. Surprisingly we seem to have fallen victim to our own success in training nurses to the very highest standards. Our University Hospitals simply teach us our nurses to be the best!

Market Call In

Written by David Chappell and published in Bury Free Press on Fri 26th Feb 2010

In January I 'called in' the Council's decision to employ consultants to review our unique and historic market.

Getting out of the Recession

Written by David Chappell and published in BFP on Sat 13th Feb 2010

The collapse of confidence in the Greek Government's debts has spread to Spain and now the stock markets around the world are tumbling threatening the double dip recession that Vince Cable forecast. What are the policies that will guide us through this economic turmoil? Certainly not a rush to cuts in government spending, and a freeze on public sector wages will hurt the majority who already work for the community on low wages. Cutting jobs and putting people on the dole will reduce tax revenue while adding to government debt from increased benefits.

Getting our Schools Right!

Tuesday's edition of the EADT (2/2/10) showed the confusion in Tory Education policy in the region.

Combat Aircraft programme £9.7 billion over budget

Written by David Chappell and published in EADT on Thu 4th Feb 2010

Leon Stedman (EADT 30/1/10) is sadly mistaken if he thinks the British public will continue to accept that a rebuke to a civil servant brought about by a question from an MP constitutes bringing a civil servant to brook is sufficient to address mistakes made. The British public want an end to bonuses to civil servants and quango managers and for serious mistakes sacking should be an option we have in dealing with serious failures, and serious failures we have in abundance.

CCTV costs out of proportion!

Written by David Chappell and published in BFP on Wed 13th Jan 2010

It was disappointing to see an experienced Councillor like Sarah Mildmay-White seek to justify the annual cost of CCTV cameras (BFP 19th January). As Councillors we are guardians of the taxpayers money and have to look hard at the choices available. The Council hope to save £1.64 million over 2010/2011, and may have to cut back much further if George Osbourne has his wicked way with public spending. 'The fact is that the police say 80% of CCTV coverage is unusable in Court' and that is a quote (23rd June 08) from the former Tory Shadow Home Secretary David Davis, so he should know.

Rights! What Rights?

Written by David Chappell and published in EADT on Thu 7th Jan 2010

On 28th December Barrie Skelcher blasted away again with his blustergun on Europe. Now I can't tell if he is attacking Europe or the European Union. Neither is governed as he claims by a President so it is very confusing about what he is actually complaining about this time. What was starkly obvious was his lack of knowledge of British traditions. We are not citizens! The French and Germans are citizens, but we Mr Skelcher are subjects! Subjects of the Crown, and long may it remain so!

CCTV and Cameras

I read with interest the report on CCTV's in West Suffolk.

NHS - Care, or Tax burden?

Written by David Chappell and published in EADT on Thu 3rd Dec 2009

Sue Hayter talks in her letter (EADT 26/11/09) of the need for equality in assessing care needs. This is fine in principle and the NHS Continuing Healthcare programme attempts to address the problems, but the reference to supporting people with acute needs is the nub of the problem in the NHS. The general emphasis on specialist acute care provision seems at the heart of the hospital closure programme. Acute care is the most expensive care, and we seem to be failing to give sufficient priority to prevention and detection with long waits still taking place for hip operations which demobilise people. The poor quality of our cancer detection and treatment compared to Europe has recently been highlighted, and the post code lottery regarding successful treatment exposed.

Democratic Accountability

Written by David Chappell and published in EADT on Thu 26th Nov 2009

Mr Stedman's short letter (EADT 24/11/09) was short and effective in delivering misinformation to readers. Other letters such as Stuart Letten, and Ian Smith (both EADT 20/11/09) seem to be seeking to drip a poisonous misrepresentation on the subject of the European Union. The Lisbon Treaty transferred power back to the 27nations of the EU, and democratised some of the institutions.

Car tax

Written by David Chappell and published in EADT/ Bury Free Press on Sun 22nd Nov 2009

I have to endorse the aspirations of Suffolk Acre (EADT 19/11/09) in calling for a reduction in car tax for those in rural areas.

The price of democracy

Written by David Chappell and published in EADT on Mon 12th Oct 2009

I do have sympathy with some of the views expressed by Clive Strutt (EADT 6th Oct) the public really have to decide what they want. These days MP's earn less than the senior civil servants, which in a democratic process they should be able to bring to account. But they can't! It sometimes seems it is civil servants who have jobs for life, and Minister's who have to fall on their sword when the civil servants foul up!

Final Chance for St Edmundsbury

Written by David Chappell and published in Bury Free press on Fri 4th Sep 2009

Paul Lambillion (BFP 28th August) was right to highlight the problems that arise as a result of poor planning and the residents of Moreton Hall can have no confidence in the Borough Council maintaining a firm grip on development. Recent builders so condensed the building that they had lots of spare land left over and the Council instead of insisting on community use of the spare land permitted the developer opportunity profits by allowing them to build further housing.

NHS Care

Written by David Chappell and published in EADT on Sat 29th Aug 2009

Has the NHS lost its way when comes to being the caring service?

NHS Reform

Written by David Chappell and published in EADT on Thu 20th Aug 2009

Diana Ronaldson in her letter (EADT 15/8/09) highlighted a problem that working nurses often fear to mention. Their contract makes it a disciplinary offence to speak out, but it is from the frontline, not senior management that we need to hear from to understand the depth of the problem. The government has not pumped money into front line services. It has pumped money into managing and controlling the service.

To Vote, or Not to Vote

Written by David Chappell and published in EADT on Thu 6th Aug 2009

To Vote, or Not To Vote was the very important issue raised by John Culverwell (EADT 1st August). What is achieved by not voting? Precisely...nothing.

Parliamentary Reforms?

Written by David Chappell and published in EADT on Mon 27th Jul 2009

Clive Strutt raised some important issues in his letter (EADT 24th July) with regard to the selection of MP's and Parliamentary procedures. Indeed the Mother of Parliaments is increasingly known around the world as the Grand Mother of Parliaments these days. Many of the procedures such as requiring 100MP's to be present to close a debate frustrate democracy and allow important measures to be 'talked out.' The Government frequently blocks private members bills on important subjects; the absence of MP's for whatever reason is used as tactic to block important measures.

Immigration. Problem or Cure?

Written by David Chappell and published in EADT on Fri 24th Jul 2009

Barrie Skelcher in his letter (EADT 23rd July) raised concerns over immigration. A concern a lot of people have. It does not help that we do not have accurate figures to enable a proper discussion of this thorny issue, but should taxpayer's money be wasted counting, or attempting to count people? There are more pressing needs such as social care and care of our elderly. Indeed care of the elderly is one of the areas that foreigners are prepared to come and work here on low wages. Our sick in hospitals are looked after by many foreign doctors and nurses, and despite high levels of unemployment farmers still struggle to find British people willing to earn a wage in sporadic employment picking fruit.
